Chapter 12

LECTURES

During the fifth week, Prof returned to his classes with us as he had promised. We deserved credit for standing up to his barrage of questions with dignity. We were a bit worn out, but not as much as I thought we would be.

I would say our bodies were given a rest, while we shifted focus on our brains.

If the first day was about testing knowledge, the second day introduced a new topic. Before that, we studied how the world had collapsed in the past. This information was interesting and informative, even though I had already heard a lot from my aunt. However, when you experienced it firsthand through photos, books, and discussions with the instructor and other students, it provided a deeper understanding.

“Today we will investigate the phenomenon of Divers and their impact on the world,” Prof declared on the second day of the new cycle as we gathered. “This falls under the broader topic of the interaction between humanity and the Pit.”

The Pit was talked about in previous lectures, but it was only mentioned briefly and not in the way most of us wanted. For us, the Pit was something that was both mythical and captivating, yet also frightening.

“The population as a whole was initially unaware of the situation they were being faced with. It is possible that they didn’t even notice the emergence of a rift that appeared in the wilderness without any associated earthquakes or noise. The cause of this phenomenon remains a mystery, as no concrete answers could be found, or perhaps certain individuals withheld their findings from the general public,” Prof sarcastically remarked. “While the early stages of the Pit’s existence are crucial, they aren’t particularly captivating.”

Once again, he turned to the slides and demonstrated a part we already knew. Prof often repeated the material several times over. He had little trust in our intellectual abilities.

“Eventually, the Pit anomaly was discovered and scientists, military personnel, and journalists swarmed it to conduct research. The information on it became publicized and was discussed in the news for a brief period. For only a few days, to be exact,” Prof pointed out. “Nowadays, the Pit carries a mystical and legendary meaning for us survivors and serves as an essential part of life. For people back then, it was just a hole in the ground. With epidemics, various political incidents, and raging wars, humanity had ample dilemmas to confront at the time. Eventually, it became apparent that it was not just a mere pit,” Prof announced with a grin. “Years were spent in reconstructing the chronology of the Pit. It is clear now that the Russian team that first discovered it on their territory, was the pioneer in extracting a small enhancement gem from it. They encountered various obstacles, such as monsters and anomalies while exploring the first level.”

Prof presented recorded footage of the initial descent into the Pit.

“We were very fortunate that all of the procedures were meticulously recorded and archived.”

He paused and looked at all of us with an annoyed expression.
